A Pre-Trip Gift

Montgomery Scott (Monty) Mace, our 18-year old Silky terrier, has been on the decline for some number of months.  First it was marked by no longer wanting to jump, then he stopped sleeping in bed and wanted to sleep on the floor on a mat, then came the constant shifting of food he'd eat, and the past month or so he's been staggering and slipping occasionally.

Montgomery Scott Mace
Of course we chalked it up to his advanced age (126 in human years!) and waited for the worst to happen.  The sudden weight loss over the past couple weeks was, perhaps, the signal that his time with us was drawing shorter.  We decided to have our vet, Dr. Shields, check him out before leaving him for two weeks of boarding at the vet's kennel.   We hoped to learn if, in fact, his seemingly steep decline signaled the worst and whether we had to leave for vacation on a down note.

To our amazement, Dr. Shields called us last evening to say he wasn't dying, but that he IS diabetic!  With a couple shots of insulin each day and a strict diet (+ the two weeks we're gone in the vet's "spa"), our little friend should be good as new.   We visited him this morning and the difference after the first couple doses of insulin was downright amazing!   He wasn't staggering, he seemed alert and interested in his environment, and we were deeply grateful.

So wonderful for God to give us such a nice gift before we ever left Pickerington.   We know Monty (nor we) will live forever, but a few more weeks, months, years (?) are something we treasure.  Now off to see the Russkies with a song in our heart and a smile on our faces.  Next post from St. Petersburg.
